Dis-Maties is a society for students with disabilities and also anyone else who wants to learn more about disabilities and become involved. Our goal is to ensure that students with disabilities experience a student life that is as rich as that of any other student, both in a social and an academic context.
The Disability Unit at Stellenbosch University asked a number of us to form a committee towards the end of 2012 and to revive the society, as it had been inactive for a number of years. We were only too happy to do this. We have had a number of successful events in the past three years.
One of the most important things we do is awareness raising. We feel that the first step towards effecting positive change is to inform people what it is like to be disabled. It is also very important for us to make these events fun. Anyone can become a member of Dis-Maties, even if you don't have a disability. If you are interested in disability awareness issues, you are welcome.
The vision of this society is to be a support system for students with disabilities whether social or academic. It strives to create a space for students with disabilities to express themselves, advocate for their issues and to act as a secondary advice forum for Stellenbosch University structures. It also seeks to promote awareness of people living with disabilities, furthering their integration into Stellenbosch society, and consequently, the world.
The mission of this society is to be one that organises social functions, constant awareness-raising about the issues regarding students with disabilities, be social mentors for new students with disabilities, have outreach programs and help with recruiting students with disabilities to Stellenbosch University.
